Priorities for Youth
The Department of Education in the process of developing Priorities for Youth which will build on the current Strategy for the Delivery of Youth Work in NI 2005-2008.
In developing the Priorities, the Department is working with stakeholders from across the sector and beyond to identify the main issues currently facing youth work and determine the Priorities on which to focus, prior to and beyond the establishment of the new Education and Skills Authority.
The Department began a process in 2008 to gather information and evidence for use in developing the Priorities. The Department issued 3 questionnaires to -
- Children and Young People
- Youth Workers, Leaders and Volunteers
- Managers in youth or relevant childrens youth settings
Over 800 responses to this part of the process were received and independently analysed. The findings of these questionnaires can be accessed by clicking on the links below -

In order to ensure that the Department accessed views from a broad cross section of the sector, Youthnet, an umbrella organisation for the voluntary youth sector, also sought views from children and young people within their member organisations as well as youth leaders and workers and senior managers within voluntary youth organisations. Youthnet sought responses in particular from communities of interest and consulted with organisations and individuals representing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, Minority Ethnic, Irish Medium Sector, Uniformed Sector, Creative Arts, Rural Communities, and Deprived Urban areas.
A total of 1294 children and young people responded to this part of the process and a report of the findings can be accessed by clicking on the following link -

A presentation summarising the findings will be added to the website shortly.
In addition, the Youth Forum targeted young people who are not currently using the youth service and those children and young people that may be considered marginalised or socially excluded. They used a range of methods to engage with children and young people including focus groups, street based consultation and an online questionnaire. A total of 939 young people responded and the report can be accessed on the following link -

The key findings from the questionnaires will be discussed in a series of focus groups which will run after the summer and this will be followed by a formal consultation process. We intend to engage with those who have an involvement or interest in youth work, as this will ensure that the key issues are identified and prioritised in the future.
