Statistics on education
Statistics and Research Branch collects a number of statistics relating to schools, pupils and teachers. These are gathered via the annual School Census Exercise, the Summary of Annual Examination Results, the School Leavers Survey and an annual return on teacher numbers.
Various data are held about pupils, such as gender, religion, ethnicity (including Travellers), Special Educational Needs and entitlement to free school meals. They are summarised at Northern Ireland level, or, in some cases presented at Education and Library Board area, or school level.
Data are also held on teacher numbers, on pupil: teacher ratios, on destinations of school leavers, transfer procedure test results, key stage assessments, the participation rate of 16 and 17 year olds in full time education and on the levels of qualifications achieved by pupils at schools in Northern Ireland.
Where queries cannot be resolved using the data presented here, you should contact us. Statistics and Research Branch will conduct special analysis of data held upon request, where it is appropriate. A small charge may be associated with this.
Geographical representations of Northern Ireland education statistics may also be accessed on the Northern Ireland Neighbourhood Information Service (NINIS) part of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency website.
