The Department of Education (DE) Research briefings are designed to provide attractive, interesting and easy access to research findings for policy makers, researchers, teachers, lecturers, employers and the public to facilitate informed discussion of educational issues.

This research was organised around two main elements. The first comprised a consideration of systematic change in schools in Northern Ireland over the last ten years, both as a consequence of the selective system and the introduction of open enrolment following the 1989 Education Reform Order. The second comprised a detailed consideration of the impact of selection across a number of more specific domains.

This project reviews the literature related to the education of native English speaking children who have experienced their education through the medium of another language.

Three years later: A follow-up survey of teachers who qualified in 1995 RB 1/2000 PDF 167 KB

The cohort of teachers who qualified in Northern Ireland in 1995 was the first, since annual monitoring began in 1978, in which those known to be in permanent posts in their first year were substantially outnumbered by those known to be in temporary posts. This is follow-up survey on the 1995 cohort.
