APPOINTMENT OF ‘GENERAL INTEREST’ MEMBERS TO EDUCATION AND LIBRARY BOARDS

The Department of Education invites applications for membership to four Education and Library Boards:

The Belfast Education and Library Board;

The North Eastern Education and Library Board;

The Southern Education and Library Board; and

The Western Education and Library Board

Membership of each board consists of District Councillors and representatives of the interests of Transferors of controlled schools and Trustees of maintained schools. These posts are filled through nominations from the Councils and Transferor and Trustee Organisations.  The remaining posts consist of persons appointed by reason of their interest in the services for which the board is responsible and it is in respect of the latter ‘general interest’ category that applications are being sought, including from serving teachers in grant-aided schools. The total number of posts across the boards is 21.

This is expected to be a short-term appointment, however,the term of the appointment will be for the transitional period until the new Education and Skills Authority is established.

Time Commitment and Remuneration

Board members are expected to make a time commitment of at least 25 to 30 hours per month, including evening meetings and public occasions.  Members receive payments by way of attendance allowances or financial loss allowances in relation to their functions as members of the board.

Applicants will be expected to complete a short application form to describe how they meet certain key requirements for appointment; an eligibility sift of applications forms will be carried out by the Department; and ‘conversations with a purpose’ will be held with eligible candidates to confirm and validate the suitability of candidates for the post.  The decision on those who will be appointed will be made by the Minister of Education.

The application form can be downloaded from this web-site or copies can be requested from the Educational Governance Team, Department of Education, telephone 028 9127 9461 or e-mail egppt@deni.gov.uk.

Closing date:

Applications should be returned to the address on the application form by 31 December 2009.

Equality of Opportunity

The Department is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified people irrespective of religious belief, political opinion, race, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or whether or not they have dependants.
