Languages Strategy

The Department of Education has asked the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, jointly ran by the University of Ulster and Queen’s University, to develop recommendations on a languages strategy for Northern Ireland.  The strategy will aim to:

  • promote greater uptake of languages as a practical competence for all;
  • promote the uptake of a wider range of languages, including European and major global languages but also looking at English as an Additional Language, Irish and Ulster-Scots; and
  • address language learning at all levels, including primary, post-primary, further and higher education.

The Subject Centre wants to consult as widely as possible to get views from a range of people on language teaching and learning.  It has launched a website to provide information and get people involved in the consultation process and as a first step has set up an online questionnaire on the website.  You can access the website using the link: www.nils.org.uk and the Department would encourage you to get involved and fill in the questionnaire.
