Literacy and Numeracy Strategy

The Strategy provides the focus for driving standards up further.
The main elements are:

  • revised Education and Library Board structures to support schools
  • a range of intervention measures for the teaching of literacy and numeracy
  • in-service support and training for teachers
  • development of new support materials for teachers
  • comprehensive advice and bench-marking information to schools
  • targets for improvement including a requirement on schools to set their own targets
  • the provision of summer literacy and numeracy schemes

The progress being made against end of key stage assessment targets is monitored on an ongoing basis; standards have steadily improved  in the primary sector in recent years as measured by end of key stage 2 assessment.  In the post-primary sector there is also evidence of improvement in key stage 3.  However, the figures in individual years may be at variance with the overall trend.
