Consultation on draft Education (School Development Plans) Regulations 2010
Article 13(3) of the 1998 Education Order places a duty on Boards of Governors, through the scheme of management, to prepare, and periodically revise, a School Development Plan. In doing so, Boards of Governors are required to consult the principal and consider any guidance provided by the Department, the Education & Library Boards, and, in the case of Catholic maintained schools, CCMS, and also any inspection findings.
Every School a Good School – a Policy for School Improvement published on 30 April 2009 includes a commitment by the Department to review the requirements relating to school development planning. Self-evaluation leading to sustained self-improvement is at the core of the Policy and the aim in revising the regulations is to promote effective development planning to bring about improvement in standards.
The Department of Education is consulting on draft revised regulations. The consultation runs from 2nd February to the 26th March 2010. Under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 the Department is required to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity. In order to determine whether an Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA) is necessary, all policies must be screened.
The results of the Department’s screening process indicates that the policy does not need to be subjected to a full equality impact assessment. The screening document is available for viewing using the link below:
