School Holidays 2010/11

Fixed school term dates for pupils in Northern Ireland are

  • Schools start back after summer holidays on 1 September 2010
  • Halloween 29 October – 1 November 2010
  • Christmas/New Year 23 December 2010 - 3 January 2011 (inclusive)
  • Mid-term 14 - 15 February 2011
  • * St Patrick's 17 March 2011
  • Easter 21 – 29 April 2011
  • May Day 2 & 30 May 2011
  • Summer holiday begins 1 July 2011

* Not all schools close on St Patrick's Day and 30 May.

These are the dates when the majority of schools are closed to pupils. However, teachers must attend school on five of these dates for training purposes. Schools may also close for School Development Days to give teachers time to work on school improvement matters. Between 2010/11 and 2014/15 schools will have five Development Days available each year.

Schools have discretion to close for up to five optional days. Optional days are intended to cover closings throughout the year in special circumstances, for example death of a person connected with the school, need to move premises, start of building work, church holy days.

Therefore, optional days are likely to differ from school to school.
