School Governors

New governor applications

The reconstitution of boards of governors takes place every 4 years and the current term of boards of governors is due to end on 30 June 2009 for controlled and maintained schools. Although most schools are reconstituted at the same time, voluntary grammar and grant maintained integrated schools have various dates for reconstituting.

New applications are welcome from candidates wishing to become Departmental (DE) school governors, as vacancies arise throughout the 4 year term of a board of governors.

DE governors sit on the boards of governors of most schools ie. Controlled nursery, grammar and special schools, controlled integrated, grant maintained integrated, voluntary grammar, Catholic and other maintained schools, but not all schools. Should you be interested in serving as a Departmental governor on the board of governors of any particular school, please make this clear on your application form (PDF 44 KB), which is also available in the Irish language (PDF 45 KB).

The Department is keen to attract candidates with skills in financial management, personnel or human resource management or business management in particular.

A booklet, Becoming a School Governor (PDF 210 KB), explains the duties of a governor and the types of governor who form a school board of governors.
