Class sizes at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1

In the north of Ireland, the commitment to reduce primary class sizes to a maximum of 30 pupils applies to all pupils at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, ie P1 to P4 inclusive.  

The policy was initiated with P1 classes in September 1998 and was extended to P1 and P2 classes in September 1999.  The policy covers all of Key Stage 1 from September 2000.Education and Library Boards administer the policy.

The circular below reminds schools of their statutory responsibility to ensure that class sizes for pupils in years 1 - 4 do not exceed 30 pupils

Applications for Financial Assistance 2012/2013

The letter below is to advise principals of grant-aided primary schools that applications for financial assistance to meet the Class Sizes requirement must be submitted to your relevant Education and Library Board (in the case of controlled schools) and via the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools to your Education and Library Board (in the case of maintained schools) not later than 16 March 2012.
