Membership of Education and Library Boards
When the Education and Skills Authority (ESA) was not established as expected on 1 January 2010, it was decided that the Education and Library Boards (which will cease to exist when ESA is established) should be reconstituted as smaller bodies, in line with having more streamlined structures and processes in place in moving towards the establishment of ESA and applying the minimum numbers of members required under the legislation.
The current Executive has, in its draft programme for government, set out a commitment to have ESA operational in 2013.
Selection and appointment processes have recently been completed to appoint members to the North Eastern, Southern and Western Education and Library Boards during the transitional period up to the establishment of ESA.
The selection process to fill the four Councillor posts on the Belfast Education and Library Board is currently underway.
In Relation to the South Eastern Education and Library Board (SEELB), the terms of appointment for the previous membership of the Board expired in 2009. The Board of the SEELB will not be reconstituted in the run up to the establishment of ESA. The current SEELB Commissioners will continue to serve until that time.
