Every School A Good School (ESaGS)

Every School a Good School - a Policy for School Improvement was launched by the former Education Minister Caitríona Ruane on 30 April 2009.

The focus of the Policy is to improve outcomes for pupils and young people.

The Policy sets out the core characteristics of a successful school:

  • Child-centred provision
  • High quality teaching and learning
  • Effective leadership
  • A school connected to its local community

A key element of the Policy is that schools themselves, including through rigorous self-evaluation, are best placed to identify areas of improvement and to drive changes that can bring about better outcomes for all their pupils.

The Policy aims therefore to support schools and teachers in their work to raise standards and overcome the barriers to learning that pupils may face.
