POBAL, the umbrella organisation for the Irish speaking community, carried out research on children in the Irish medium education sector betweenSeptember 2006 and September 2008. The purpose of the study was to identify the special educational, health, linguistic and social needs of bilingual children, to identify their support needs; to raise awareness of the specific requirements of bilingual children with special education needs among professionals; to recommend the structures that need to be put in place within appropriate sectors; and, to inform future planning for the sector.
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) was commissioned in November 2008 by the Department of Education to carry out an audit of counselling services and other therapeutic interventions in primary and special schools in the North of Ireland. The main purpose of the study is to inform policy direction by determining the nature and level of need in relation to the emotional health and well-being of pupils in primary and special schools and to identify any related services or initiatives currently being implemented in these settings.
