• Pastoral care in schools - Child protection (PDF 342 KB)

  This publication provides guidance to schools and others on their responsibilities in relation to child protection, including the action to be taken to enable cases of suspected abuse to be properly considered and pursued. It also includes guidance on how complaints against school staff should be handled. The contents do not constitute, or purport to be, an authorative interpretation of the law: that is exclusively a matter for others.

  This document, published in 2001, provides guidance for staff to develop and review their policies and procedures surronding the way pupils behave in schools. It reflects strategies and examples of good practice to help promote and maintain positive behaviour in schools. There is also a section on developing an anti-bullying culture.

• Strategic Review of Education (PDF 893 KB)

  Report of an Independent Strategic Review of Education carried out by Professor Sir George Bain. He examined the funding of the education system, in particular the strategic planning and organisation of the schools' estate, taking account of the curriculum changes, including the wider provision for 14 - 19 year olds and also demographic trends.

  This Supplement was issued by the Department of Education under Article 4 of the 1996 Order and is operative from 1 September 2005. The status, coverage, principles and essential practices and procedures and detailed guidance contained in existing Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs 1998 (hereafter referred to as the Code of Practice) are unchanged by this Supplement.
