Class Sizes at Key Stage 1

In the north of Ireland, the commitment to reduce primary class sizes, to a maximum of 30 pupils, applies to all pupils at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (P1 to P4 inclusive)

The policy was introduced in 1998 and is administered by the Education and Library Boards.  The policy now covers all Key Stage 1

Schools have a statutory responsibility to ensure that class sizes for pupils in years 1 - 4 do not exceed 30 pupils.

The following Circulars inform school authorities about revised procedures for applying for a class size exception, if such an exception will also result in the school exceeding its agreed admission/enrolment number.
