Class Sizes at Key Stage 1
In the north of Ireland, the commitment to reduce primary class sizes, to a maximum of 30 pupils, applies to all pupils at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (P1 to P4 inclusive)
The policy was introduced in 1998 and is administered by the Education and Library Boards. The policy now covers all Key Stage 1
Schools have a statutory responsibility to ensure that class sizes for pupils in years 1 - 4 do not exceed 30 pupils.
The following Circulars inform school authorities about revised procedures for applying for a class size exception, if such an exception will also result in the school exceeding its agreed admission/enrolment number.
Applications for Financial Assistance 2013/2014
Principals of grant-aided primary schools are advised that applications for financial assistance to meet the Class Sizes requirement must be submitted to your relevant Education and Library Board, and via the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools to your Education and Library Board (in the case of maintained schools), not later than 15 March 2013.
