Safer routes to schools
To encourage young people to walk, cycle or use public transport in their journey to and from school
The Travelwise 'Safer Routes to Schools' initiative is led by the Department of Regional Development (DRD) in partnership with the Department of Education (DE).
The initiative aims to tackle the school run by encouraging young people to walk, cycle and use public transport in their journey to and from school.
A pilot study consisting of six schools across Northern Ireland is currently underway. Through the development of a School Travel Plan, the schools are at various stages of receiving infrastructure to support sustainable modes of travel.
The Department of Education is responsible for any necessary infrastructure within school grounds such as cycle paths and cycle shelters.
Roads Service (DRD) is responsible for the provision of any infrastructure improvement to the highway such as traffic calming measures and cycle lanes.
The initative is to be expanded by developing an accelerated and enhanced fast-tracked approach-
- Safer Routes to Schools Accelerated - a range of work involving limited traffic management improvements; cycle shelters; and lockers. Education and awareness classes covering sustainable transport and road-safety training which will be carried out by the Department of Environment (DOE), as well as exploring opportunities for introducing car-sharing schemes for parents.
- Safer Routes to Schools Enhanced - entails a more detailed package including the development of a School Travel Plan and further infrastructure work.
Schools to be included in the Accelerated programme will be agreed by DRD and DE.
