Youth Councils

The Department of eduation is keen to support all children and young people who want to be part of a youth council.

What is a Youth Council

Youth Councils come in variety of forms, but are usually a group of up to 30 young people usually from the same area, sharing common interests and who are supported by a Youth Worker. The purpose of the Council is to represent the voices of young people to decision makers.

Why get involved in a Youth Council.

  • Article 12 of the UNited Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child says that children and young people should have their say in decisions that affect their lives.
  • It is an important and useful way to provide leadership and edvelopment opportunities for children and young people.
  • It is a useful way for decision makers to have access to the views and opinions of young people on an ongoin basis

Guidance on how to form a Youth Council

The 'Making Your Youth Council Work for You: Guidance for Effective Youth Councils' resource is designed to enable youth councils to 'dip in' and explore the points that are most important to them. It contains 10 guidance points that have been identified by young people from youth councils accross the the north of Ireland, including: creaing a purpose and setting goals; ensuring enjoyment and reward for members;and having your voice heard.
