Fact Sheet – Ill-health benefits
If I become ill, can I retire?
- Yes, provided the Department of Education accept that you fulfil the scheme’s eligibility criteria.
Will my service be increased?
- That will depend upon your ability to undertake other gainful employment.
- For more information see the ‘Ill-health Retirement Benefits’ leaflet on the DE website.
Can I return to teaching?
- Yes, but if you do your pension will cease.
Can I start another job?
- That will depend upon your illness and the level of ill health retirement that is awarded.
How do I apply?
- Your employer should provide you with occupational health support throughout your illness, which should include considering the options for different working patterns or discussing whether a more suitable job is available.
- If you decide to apply, you should complete the ill-health application form (TP5). Part 1 should be completed by the teacher, part 2 by the reporting doctor, and part 3 by your employer.
- The TP5 form should be returned to Teachers’ Pension Branch by your employer or by you if you are out of service.
